Boys & Girls Clubs Uphold its Mission

Thursday, August 20, 2015

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Hot Springs continues to uphold its mission to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens – and we’ve definitely been busy while doing so.

Recently three Club members participated in our annual legislative program. This program teaches teen members what the legislative branch is, the legislative process and who makes up the legislative branch. At the end of the program, the three girls, along with members from the Hill City Unit, took a trip to Pierre where they sat in session with local and state wide Senate and House members. While in Pierre, Jaiden Campbell, Lacie Grapentine and Shelby Nellen toured the capitol, the state’s crime lab and met South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley and Governor Dennis Daugaard.

Meet our outstanding 2017 SD State Youth of the Year!

Thursday, February 9, 2017

We are proud to announce Zoe Frauen as our 2017 South Dakota State Youth of the Year!News

Zoe is intelligent, resilient, and kind: community-minded, wise, and knows just how hard life was in this town before the Club opened.

“I am a difference maker. I talk about real life issues, support my peers and help my community. I want to fight hunger and homelessness, set goals for my future, and change lives with the Club. I know how hard life was in this town before the Club opened, and that I could have been a casualty of circumstance. Instead I found the Club and found myself. I made choices that put me on track to be a success. I know the change that the Club has made in me, and the change that I can make in the world.” – Zoe, 10th Grade, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Black Hills

Selected among nine other outstanding youth in the South Dakota state competition , Zoe Frauen has been named the 2017 South Dakota State Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Youth of the Year is a national Boys and Girls Club program that honors and celebrates the most inspiring teens and their incredible journeys at the local, state and national level.  As the South Dakota Youth of the Year, Zoe will serve as an ambassador for all teens in the state, will receive a $5,000 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and will go on to vie for the regional Youth of the Year and ultimately the national title.

Zoe looks forward to a future of serving and leading as an ambassador for Boys & Girls Clubs and will continue to encourage young people across the Black Hills to become leaders in their Clubs, families and communities. This year will undoubtedly be filled with countless, incredible opportunities that would not be possible without the Club and donors like you. Celebrating our 15 year anniversary!

A SPECIAL REASON TO CELEBRATE

Boys & Girls Club kids are having a blast this summer! At the Club, members have access to a wealth of programming that help combat summer learning loss. This summer, in particular, is a special one because 2017 marks the 15th anniversary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Black Hills.  Prior to the Club being chartered in September 2002, it was known as the Hill City Teen Center. Over the years, the breadth and scope of the Club has expanded exponentially. While it was a grassroots vision for our steering committee to realize the need in our community and start the organization 15 years ago, I am not sure anyone could have envisioned the kind of growth the organization has experienced since that time. From a small 800 foot building with a single ping-pong table to an organization that works from three sites in the communities of Hot Springs, Hill City and Lead-Deadwood, annually serving nearly 800 school-aged youth.

Over our history, we have been blessed to have exceptional leadership at the board and fundraising committee levels. Many of our board members have been involved with the Club for over five years, and they continue to come back every year with a renewed passion to serve the kids in our community. People like our board president, John Pence, who has been involved in the Club since 2009, continue to be actively involved in fundraising and governance. We are very fortunate to have men and women who have given so much of their time and resources over the years to benefit the kids in our communities. We are also fortunate to have attracted highly qualified and motivated staff. Those in key leadership roles are staying with our organization longer and longer, which provides consistent services to kids. Our staff is constantly looking for ways to reach more kids, expand opportunities and provide new experiences. We would not be successful today if not their dedications to the Club and commitment to our members.

Finally, and equally importantly, we are so fortunate to have such a supportive community that works so hard to provide the resources and support needed to meet the ever-growing demand for youth services in Hill City. Without the support of local businesses and individuals, we would not be able to reach the number of kids with the programs and activities we do today. Because of our supporters in the community, for only $25 a year, kids are learning how to excel in science and math, learning how to eat and stay healthy, give back to their community and to become leaders. With the school year fast approaching, it is our responsibility as a community to make out-of-school time a priority. It is critical that we keep our kids safe and engaged in positive programs after school.

We are excited to announce that we just kicked off our Annual Great Futures Campaign, and we invite our communities to join us by making a gift today to support kids in our community. Our campaign raises money for the Club’s after-school and summer programs for youth, grades K-12. The campaign’s goal this year is to raise $103,000 for the Clubs, annual operating budget. To date we have raised $65,000 with early donations from Board, staff and businesses. Every extra dollar allows us to provide more opportunities to serve more kids, more often!

In closing, thank you for being part of  our movement and helping give countless youth in Hill City the opportunity to succeed while providing them a safe place to grow, have fun and be kids.

Gifts toward the Great Futures Campaign may be mailed to your local Club. Every dollar raised in Hill City stays in the community to support our kids.

Driving Change in Teen Driving Behaviors with The UPS Foundation

UPS Road CodeIt seems like every day of the week has its national day: National Blueberry Muffin Day (July 11), National Take a Hike Day (November 17). And while we’re not all enjoying a blueberry muffin on our daily hike (though I wouldn’t be opposed), one activity that many of us across the nation take part in nearly every single day of the week is driving. And for most of us, that starts in our teens with getting our learner’s permit and license, when we are just beginning to navigate the rules of the road.

This week (October 21 through October 27) is National Teen Driver Safety Week. At Boys & Girls Clubs of America, we’re proud to have partnered with The UPS Foundation for nearly a decade to drive change in teen driving behaviors. After all, who knows their road rules better than UPS drivers? Delivering 5.1 billion packages a year, 15 million a day, this team of brown-clad employees not only regularly practices safe driving, but honors those who prove that safety training works. UPS’s Circle of Honor includes more than 10,000 UPS drivers who have driven for 25 years or more without an avoidable auto accident — together they’ve logged 14 billion miles of safe driving, enough to circle Earth at the equator 562,000 times.

That’s a high bar to work toward! But with UPS Road Code, our teen safe driving program, we’re paving the way. More than 125 trained UPS employees serve as volunteer instructors, working with Club teens through interactive classroom-based instructions derived from trainings that UPS drivers go through, as well as time “behind the wheel” on a virtual driving simulator. Currently, more than 35,000 teens have graduated from UPS Road Code at 63 Boys & Girls Clubs across the nation. When you compare that with the startling realities of teen driving — motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, accounting for more than one in three teenage deaths* — that’s potentially more than 35,000 lives saved.

We’re proud to share that The UPS Foundation has renewed Road Code through 2020, ensuring thousands more will learn their road rules from the very best. After all, the first step to a great future is getting there safely. To learn more about the program and partnership, visit BGCA.org/RoadCode.

Exciting News! The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Black Hills are preparing to reopen for summer programming! We will be opening our doors again on June 8th Please read this information thoroughly as there are many changes to our enrollment process.

In order to enroll for summer programming at the clubs parents/ guardians will need to take ALL of the following steps:

Please note that the membership forms have changed, and also include a COVID-19 related liability waiver that must be signed prior to registration. A link to the form can be found below.
  2. Annual memberships fees for club members must be up to date. As a reminder, the annual membership is $25 per child.
  3. Once the updated membership form is received, parents will need to review the BGCBH Parent and Member COVID-19 Safety Plan (link below) and then contact Charity Branum at the Hill City Club [(605) 574-2010] to schedule a time to attend a Zoom Safety briefing meeting during the week of June 1st. One parent or guardian from each household must attend a meeting in order for your child(ren) to be considered for summer enrollment.

All of the above steps must be completed to reserve your spot so act quickly to make sure your child can attend our summer programs!

Lead-Deadwood Urban Art Project Kicks Off

Friday, August 21, 2015

Using $550 in grant funds won at a Souper Starz grant competition earlier this year, the Boys and Girls Club of Lead-Deadwood kicked off the city-wide urban art project with a brightly colored six-panel retaining wall mural in the Handley Center parking lot. It features content that depicts what they like to do — garden, bike, dance, swim, ski, and read.

The mural is the first in what locals have envisioned as a series of urban art projects designed to spruce up areas around town.
